First meeting of the year will be Tuesday August 27, 2019 at 6:00 PM in room SC 122.
Welcome back everyone, I hope you all had a great Christmas break! We will be holding a meeting tomorrow (1/8/19) at 6 p.m. in SC 122 to organize the next semester and discuss times for future meetings and plant studies. We will decide on a topic for the Range Cup and preparing for the SRM. We are down to only 5 weeks left so make sure you are studying. See you then and have a good week.
Thanks to everyone who showed up! We learned a lot! Ben Noyes, the Ely Wild Horse and Burrow Specialist explained the strategies of the helicopter pilots and the crew on the ground at the catch pen. We were able to watch four groups of horses being herded by helicopter into the catch pen. Once gathering was done for the day, we discussed various employment opportunities with the BLM with the Ely Distric Manager, Pete McFadden and the Calente Field Manager, Cam Boyce. Our day concluded with a tour of the holding pens where we were shown how the wild horses are counted and sorted. This was a valuable experience and an excellent networking opportunity for all involved.
Just sharing a last minute opportunity that popped up. We have been invited to a BLM wild horse gather in Pioche, NV TOMORROW (12-8-18). We will be meeting in the science building parking lot at 4:15 a.m. It is an hour and a half drive to the town of Pioche. We will meet the BLM crew there and then drive to the gather site. This will be an all day trip. We should be back to Cedar City by 8:00 p.m.
We have reserved one university SUV so we can carpool (for free). You are welcome to bring a personal vehicle but it MUST have 4-wheel drive. The drive to the gather site will be on muddy/snowy two-track roads. You will need to bring a lunch and your own water. You will also need to dress warm! There is snow on the ground and we will be out in the flat away from town all day. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair, sunglasses and sun screen.
If you plan to attend please let Sadie know by this evening can make sure we have enough seats. This is a really neat opportunity for everyone. The Ely NV BLM office (who is conducting this gather) is looking to expand both their range and wild horse programs in the near future. This would be an awesome networking opportunity for those interested in that line of work, or for those who want to learn more about it. Let Sadie know if you have any questions.
Take a study break and come enjoy some fresh air. Hope to see you there!
Hey everyone! There will be no meeting this Tuesday, but we will meet this Thursday at 6 p.m. in room 303. It is very important that you attend, because we will be registering for the SRM. Also remember to get or renew your SRM membership by then. We will practice plants afterwards if we have time. Good luck on all your finals next week and don’t forget to study over the break, the competition will be here before we know it. Have a great week!
