Wild Horse Gather Pictures

Everyone was really excited for the wild horse meet.

Thanks to everyone who showed up! We learned a lot! Ben Noyes, the Ely Wild Horse and Burrow Specialist explained the strategies of the helicopter pilots and the crew on the ground at the catch pen. We were able to watch four groups of horses being herded by helicopter into the catch pen. Once gathering was done for the day, we discussed various employment opportunities with the BLM with the Ely Distric Manager, Pete McFadden and the Calente Field Manager, Cam Boyce. Our day concluded with a tour of the holding pens where we were shown how the wild horses are counted and sorted. This was a valuable experience and an excellent networking opportunity for all involved.

Wild Horse Gather

Hello everyone,

Just sharing a last minute opportunity that popped up. We have been invited to a BLM wild horse gather in Pioche, NV TOMORROW (12-8-18). We will be meeting in the science building parking lot at 4:15 a.m. It is an hour and a half drive to the town of Pioche. We will meet the BLM crew there and then drive to the gather site. This will be an all day trip. We should be back to Cedar City by 8:00 p.m.

We have reserved one university SUV so we can carpool (for free). You are welcome to bring a personal vehicle but it MUST have 4-wheel drive. The drive to the gather site will be on muddy/snowy two-track roads. You will need to bring a lunch and your own water. You will also need to dress warm! There is snow on the ground and we will be out in the flat away from town all day. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair, sunglasses and sun screen.

If you plan to attend please let Sadie know by this evening can make sure we have enough seats. This is a really neat opportunity for everyone. The Ely NV BLM office (who is conducting this gather) is looking to expand both their range and wild horse programs in the near future. This would be an awesome networking opportunity for those interested in that line of work, or for those who want to learn more about it. Let Sadie know if you have any questions.

Take a study break and come enjoy some fresh air. Hope to see you there!

Aspen Project

Hi everyone! We have a change of plans for Thursday night now. We will be building the wire cages for our aspen project tonight the 17th and tomorrow the 18th out at the farm. We would really appreciate all the help we can get. Also, if you have any questions on days you signed up to help with the project, email someone in the presidency or Randall. Thank you, and sorry for any confusion!!

Free Dinner!

Hi everyone, this is just a clarification on tomorrow night’s plant practice. We will actually be meeting up at the Sheep Herder’s Cabin, just before the Mountain Center, at 5:30 pm. If you don’t know where that is, one of us will meet you at the Mountain Center to show you. We are practicing for the Dutch oven cook-off, so you get a free dinner and you can invite a friend/spouse. It will be a lot of fun and we will practice the same list: Rosaceae’s, Triticeae’s and Geraniacea’s as well. Sorry for any confusion, hope you can all make it!!
If you have any questions you can ask someone in the presidency or Randall.
